This will be a hands on introductory workshop to Playback Theatre and its applications in the highschool drama classoom. A special focus will devoted to understanding the possibility to support socially engaged drama projects.
Laen is an expert facilitator of creative processes in young people and the integration of drama-based pedagogy into K-12 classrooms. He has vast experience working with teachers and students of all ages and backgrounds. His facilitation style is engaging, entertaining and highly interactive. Since graduating from L’Ecole International Jacque Lecoq (Paris) in 2004 he has toured internationally, performing and giving workshops on various aspects and uses of physical theatre for both children and adults. His expertise includes the use of physical improvisation, masks, puppetry and clown. . In 2010 he moved to South Africa and became heavily involved with the playback-inspired improvisatorytheatre company Bonfire. During his five years with Bonfire, Laen performed and facilitated on a regular basis to a wide variety of audiences throughout the country. He was also instrumental in developing Bonfire’s highly successful workshop strategy for corporate leadership and intervention. Since 2011, he has been an sessional instructor at the Creative Studies Faculty at UBC (Kelowna) and the Education Faculty at UBC (Vancouver). Laen is an active member of the Vancouver Playback Theatre company and the UBC Research Based Theatre Cluster.
